MEET ARCHIE PERCIVAL

Four-year-old Archie was recently diagnosed with the rare condition Acute Flaccid Myelitis, leaving him without the muscle strength for independent bike riding. His family sought $2365 from the John MacLean Foundation to purchase a custom-made quadricycle. This would fulfill Archie's dream of riding a bike independently at the local cycle track, located just 100m from his Cameron Park home in Newcastle.

Archie's life took a dramatic turn in 2016 when he contracted a virus, resulting in a seven-month hospitalization. He was diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis, an extremely rare condition affecting only a few children in Australia. Archie's recovery remains uncertain, with the possibility of walking unaided unclear.

Despite these challenges, Archie exhibits remarkable resilience and determination. He possesses typical cognition and a strong desire to play like other children. However, his physical recovery journey involves regular therapy, equipment trials, and managing pain. Archie's current mobility is limited, requiring full assistance for activities such as standing, walking, and transfers.

Archie's condition prevents him from safely riding a standard bike, as he lacks the necessary balance and grip strength. His right upper arm's decreased muscle control further complicates the matter. The custom quadricycle provides a safe and engaging opportunity to improve his exercise tolerance and muscle strength, aligning with his current needs for outdoor activities.
